# plates

A Spooky fact is that a number here can go for as much as 1.5 million dirhams while people in Sudan die of hunger.

The fascination with number plates is a pretty big one here in the UAE, with the arrangement of numbers on the plates playing a major factor in determining its worth.

Now, Im ok with owning a number plate thats nice, but blowing 300,000 Dirhamson digits is just wrong. There are actually businesses based on the selling and buying of number plates, and from what I can tell, their success has been phenomenal.

So why is there such a huge fan base for "special" numbers? Its because there is an opinion that the rarer your number, the more powerful you are, a notion that is widely spread among the local community here.

The only truly "special" numbers in my eyes are the police numbers:

Now these past 3 days I have seen way too many police number plates on normal {non-police} cars, about 8 cars at last count. These plates are reserved for police and CID but Sheikhs and their friends, and people who are on good terms high up can get them.

# plates starting with 8xxx and 50xxx, codes A and B, are police/ CID. The idea of seeing so many on the streets is rather unsettling, but I guess that just means that there is some leniency with their numbers.

It's because before they started selling numbers, the less figures in your plate the more powerful, important etc. you are.

I think it's stupid, having a nice numeber is okay because it's cool, but I would never pay money for a number only to so that everyone who sees my car would know i'm rich.

I would use that money on a holiday instead.

I remember one Irani student studying somewhere in KV, he bought a Toyota Corolla and a GOOD number, rather a good car and an ordinary number plate.

Now I asked him what's the big deal having a good number plate.

He replied: "I am elite"

I din't talk to him much after that, I know it's pointless dealing with such a person. It's a waste buying a good number plate--worst he just put it in a Toyota Corolla. *lol*

I don't know what impression he gives to the other drivers here, but it sure looks weird.

I pity those people who starve to death in Africa. :(

the whole issue is stupid. I mean who gives a damn what your license plate number is. Seriously, it's patheic, lame and incredibly sad.

people need to get a life, stop wasting that much money on something without any meaning.

being 'elite'. take your eliteness, because it means virually nothing.

your whole identity is based on a number. WOW, YOU ARE SUCH A FASCINATING PERSON!! I CANT WAIT TO MEET YOU!

interesting post...
ppl in the UAE (not just locals) love numbers.. on cars and on tel numbers.. even i remember in the 1980s ppl would stick S600 V12 on their shitty 190E models coz 600 is a cooler number than 190.

kudos to sheikh mohamad for letting ppl pay for numbers. the money is used on public projects and for the police. he knows that some ppl out there are rich and stupid enough to pay millions for them, so he has systemised it and made money for the country.

bravo.

i hear next step is selling mobile numbers.

wasta makes the world go round :) the najm package is a rip-off. to pay as much as u would usually pay on phone bills and to still NOT own the number? how ridiculous is that.
