The working class

So I finally started work as an analyst, woohoo... Right?

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE my job, its got the right mix of factors
for me. But one thing was a conversation I had with my coworkers on
pay. We work at an industrial plant, and therefore our company has a
natural emphasis on production. Unfortunately the pay structure isn't.

At my company we seperate employees by tiers, with each tier based on
a mix of experience, nationality (emiritisation issues) and years on
the job and pay them accordingly. But no mention of performance? Now
I'm not saying that performance doesn't factor in to our performance,
I'm saying that it isn't an explicit factor of performance.

I know for a fact that certain sharja govt jobs pay only increases
according to degrees attained, regardless of experience and
performance.

Dubai has some choice jobs in that line too (biased to something or
the other) why no standardization?

Congrats on the job.

Performance isnt a driving force in performance appraisals in govt offices, believe it or not.

Even in Abu Dhabi, your degree, years on the job, and name is what gets you paid.

In the private sector, performance is more important, however, it is only applied up to a certain point in the company.

Lets say you have a grade scale from 1 to 15. 15 being highest.

grades 1-4 are "labor" as in office boys, couriers...

Grades 5-7 are "clerical" grades. Your regular joes.

Grades 8 - 10 are managerial, 11-12 middle management, 13-15 higher management.

Performance is THE issue in the 1st cross section. If an office boy performs badly he's fired.

in the next tier performance is still important, but more so is the degree you hold, even though your degree might not even be in the same discipline. Hell, you can find a person in a bank with a geography degree.

After that, up again, performance is actually less important, even though it SHOULD be more so. In this 1st management tier, they fixate on degrees, attendance, english capabilities... All things that you should ALREADY have down at this point.

And past this point, performance is not an issue, because if you perform badly you can always pass the blame down to the people you manage.

It is what it is.

Such mismanagment cant (shouldnt) go on forever. Restructring is the name of the game now in the corporate world.

Abu Dhabi too...

On an intresting note: it used to be that the lower the # the higher the grade in... and some places have grades up to 19... weird huh?

More n more im starting to hate my bb: Its my neccesary evil

3li, it was an example. At my job the higher the number the higher you are iin the organization.

In... ADNOC for example, the lower the better.

Gobt is the same thing. Lower is better, then you go into the "Special" grades.

As for restructuring... Its a SLOW process. But it is happening. However, even 1/2 decent restructuring will take 10+ years in a company like mine. Sigh.
