Understanding your limits

Local guys have this thing,,, They have an issue with what personal space is.
Ever see 2 locals holding hands? Chances are they arent homosexual, but rather 2 very hetrosexual individuals who think its fine to be that close to each other...

BUT, the lines are a bit odd when it comes to personal belongings. If one guy told his friend that his watch was nice, in certain circles the friend would offer him the watch as a gift, in others a simple "thank you" would suffice.

So where do you cross the line?

I say it depends on the person, how close you are, and how fast you can say sorry.

My dear friend Ali, this is our culture. Holding hands in our culture is viewed differently in lets say the US or UK. In our culture its a sign of friendship, brotherhood.

The bad thing is that we Locals/Arabs got so influenced by the Western culture that in these days we ourselves consider a guy holding another's guy hand gay. I blame it on the media.

I hope you don’t consider greeting a person by hitting Noses as gay. Or the media haven’t influenced you that much? ;)

As for compliments that result in getting a gift. That has been part of our genes, not culture. If you read some jaheeleyah poetry, Arabs were proud of their generosity.

Western men hug a lot at sport matches and stuff, and it definitely isn't seen as gay. Just a few decades ago it would be fairly routine for young men to link arms, also in a non-gay way.

I certainly never view Arab men holding hands as gay. Given that homosexuality is illegal here, gays are more likely to be the two men you see who aren't holding hands!

Though to be honest, I far more often seen Indian men holding hands, so perhaps it is a part of Arab culture that is changing but will linger on longer in the subcontinent.

Actually, i beg to differ. It has grown more likely to see that gay guys became very comfortable with their sexuality in dubai to share it with the rest of us. The people i come across holding hands are more likely to be gay than straight. Why you may ask, is because straight guys are no longer comfortable holding hands in public fearing that they maybe misinterpreted.

Anyhoo, i learnt my lesson when i was walking at a mall, and i ran into 2 guys holding hands, and without even taking a second look, i made the cruelest judgment and passed them as gay. Few hours later, i pass them again, and thats when i realized that one of them was handicapped and the other was just helping him walk straight. I couldnt live with myself that day, and thats when i decided that i am never passing judgments regardless of their sexuality, sexes or ability.

Nice blog btw .. Do visit ours

I should compliment a local on his Aston Martin one day, perhaps he could gift it to me?
